The French team Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won the final match against Italian representative Inter with a 5-0 victory, becoming the UEFA Champions League champions.
Following PSG’s victory, the symbol of the French capital, the Eiffel Tower, was illuminated in the team’s colors. PSG fans began to celebrate their team’s triumph enthusiastically with fireworks in the streets of Paris, around the Parc des Princes Stadium, and throughout the capital.
Footage shared on social media shows police using pepper spray and batons to disperse crowds of fans around Parc des Princes Stadium and on the Champs-Élysées.
Meanwhile, some barricades and at least one vehicle were set on fire around the stadium, and firefighters who arrived at the scene intervened to extinguish the fire. Some fans, trying to escape the police, crossed the security cordon and jumped onto the road. It was reported that 559 people were detained in the incidents following PSG’s victory in Paris.
A 17-YEAR-OLD YOUTH WAS STABBED IN THE ABDOMEN
Violence broke out across the country due to the championship celebrations. During the celebrations in Dax, located in the Landes department, a 17-year-old young man was stabbed and lost his life. One of the places most severely affected by the incidents was the southwestern French city of Dax, where the 17-year-old was stabbed in the abdomen.
A local police spokesperson said, “The young man was inside a large crowd celebrating PSG’s victory in a designated fan area. Due to his injuries, he died in the hospital where he was taken.”
VEHICLE RAMMED INTO CROWD
Large-scale chaos occurred in Paris before, during, and after the Champions League final. In a separate incident in Grenoble, outside Paris, a vehicle rammed into an area where PSG fans had gathered.
As of Sunday morning, three members of a four-person family, including three women, are still in intensive care. The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, is in police custody.
AT LEAST 205 INJURED
According to French media reports, at least 205 people were injured in the incidents. The police announced that an investigation has been launched and security camera footage is being reviewed to identify those responsible. In Grenoble, when a driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into pedestrians, four people were injured, two of them seriously. At least nine police officers were also injured during the celebrations in the capital Paris.
