Chelsea has struck a significant deal, agreeing a £60 million fee with Brighton to acquire Brazilian forward Joao Pedro. The 23-year-old is expected to sign a long-term seven-year contract and could be immediately available for selection in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup. Joao Pedro is reportedly en route from Brazil to undergo a medical in the United States, potentially making his Chelsea debut in Friday's quarter-final clash against Palmeiras in Philadelphia.
This latest acquisition follows intense interest from other Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, with Brighton having previously rejected two unnamed bids before agreeing to Chelsea's terms, which include £55 million upfront and £5 million in add-ons. The move comes just days after Chelsea also secured English winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund for £55 million. However, unlike Joao Pedro, the 20-year-old Gittens will be ineligible for the Club World Cup, having already featured for his former German club.
Joao Pedro joins Chelsea after an impressive two-year spell at Brighton, where he delivered a notable 30 goals and 10 assists in 70 matches following his then-club record £30 million move from Watford in 2023. His impact was evident throughout his tenure, though Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler opted to rest him for their final Premier League match against Tottenham due to a "small issue."
Aggressive recruitment!
Chelsea's aggressive recruitment in the current transfer window has seen them add multiple forwards, including Liam Delap from Ipswich for £30 million, alongside other young talents like Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo and French defender Mamadou Sarr. This strategy suggests Chelsea believes there's ample room for all their new attacking talents to flourish, especially with their return to Champions League football next season.
Joao Pedro's arrival is expected to trigger the departure of French forward Christopher Nkunku, given their similar versatile playing styles. Meanwhile, Gittens will effectively replace Jadon Sancho, who has returned to Manchester United, and Mykhailo Mudryk remains provisionally suspended. With a flurry of deals already completed, Chelsea is now reportedly shifting focus from incomings to the complex task of offloading fringe players such as Joao Felix, Raheem Sterling, Armando Broja, and Carney Chukwuemeka, who are not with the squad in America. Despite the potential challenge of negotiating sales, Chelsea's strategic accumulation of attacking talent positions them for a strong push for success next season.
