Mykhailo Mudryk, the Ukrainian international winger for Chelsea, has been formally charged by the Football Association (FA) with violating its anti-doping rules. The charge stems from an "adverse finding" in a routine urine test conducted in December, which led to his provisional suspension by the FA. This development could see the 24-year-old face a ban of up to four years under FIFA's strict guidelines for intentional doping.
Upon learning of the initial finding, Mudryk stated he was in "complete shock" and vehemently denied ever knowingly using any prohibited substances. Since December 1st, he has been absent from Chelsea's matchday squads and is currently not permitted to train with the team. Despite his absence from official duties, Chelsea has confirmed its full support for Mudryk, focusing on his well-being during this challenging period. He was notably seen attending the Blues' UEFA Conference League final victory in Poland last month, albeit in a private capacity, separate from the squad.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, the FA confirmed the charge: "We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with anti-doping rule violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of regulations 3 and 4 of the FA's anti-doping regulations. As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time."
While Chelsea has not offered a fresh comment on the formal charge, the club had previously stated in December that they would work to establish the cause of the failed test, reiterating Mudryk's categorical denial of intentional use. Blues manager Enzo Maresca also expressed his belief in the player, stating, "We support Mykhailo and trust means that we believe Mykhailo."
Under FA regulations, players have the right to request an analysis of a B sample if an adverse finding occurs in their A sample. If the B sample confirms the initial finding, charges are then brought forward. At this stage, players can either accept the finding and its consequences or opt for the matter to proceed to a full hearing.
Chelsea acquired Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal valued at up to £89 million. He remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until June 2031, having scored 10 goals in 73 appearances across all competitions for the club. The outcome of this ongoing investigation will have significant implications for both Mudryk's career and Chelsea's squad dynamics.
