Crystal Palace s Europa League dream on hold: UEFA awaits Lyon decision

The fate of Crystal Palace's Europa League campaign for the upcoming season remains uncertain, as UEFA has postponed its ruling. The Eagles, who earned their spot by winning the FA Cup last season, face a challenge due to UEFA's regulations preventing two clubs under the same ownership from competing in the same European competition.
Complicating matters, John Textor, who co-owns Palace and also holds a majority stake in French club Lyon, has agreed to sell his 44% stake in the London club. While this move aims to bolster Palace's case, a new development has introduced further delays. Last week, Lyon was controversially demoted to Ligue 2 by French football authorities due to severe financial issues. Although Lyon is appealing this decision, they have agreed to relinquish their Europa League spot if the demotion stands. Consequently, UEFA has opted to await the outcome of Lyon's appeal before making a final decision on Palace's participation. The duration of Lyon's appeal process is currently unknown, with UEFA stating further details will be announced "in due course."
Sources indicate that Palace was prepared for this delay, as European football's governing body decided last week to postpone the announcement. There is a palpable concern within Selhurst Park that UEFA prefers the decision to be resolved by the French football's regulatory body (DNCG) rather than making a direct ruling. If Lyon's relegation is upheld, Palace is expected to secure its Europa League place. However, if Lyon wins its appeal, UEFA will then be forced to rule on whether Textor held significant control at Palace, a point the club disputes.
Palace argues they are not in breach of UEFA's multi-club ownership rules and feel they earned their European spot through sporting merit. There's a strong sense of injustice within the club, given their reputation as a financially well-run Premier League side, contrasting sharply with Lyon's chaotic financial state. For now, Crystal Palace's European ambitions remain firmly in the hands of the French football authorities. If granted, Palace would enter the Europa League group phase, with the draw scheduled for August 29.
