Kylian Mbappé scored two crucial penalties to lead a 10-man Real Madrid to a hard-fought victory over Marseille in their Champions League opener. The match was a rollercoaster from the start, beginning with an injury setback for Madrid just three minutes in when Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced off the pitch with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.
Things went from bad to worse for Los Blancos in the second half when Dani Carvajal, who had replaced Alexander-Arnold, was sent off with 18 minutes left after a confrontation with Marseille goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli. Despite being a man down, the 15-time European champions pushed on and were rewarded for their determination.
Mbappé, who has now scored six goals in five games for his new club, stepped up twice from the penalty spot. His first came after Geoffrey Kondogbia fouled Rodrygo in the box, leveling the score after Marseille's Timothy Weah had opened the scoring. His second penalty, which sealed the win, was awarded after a handball by defender Facundo Medina in the box.
The match was an impressive debut for Mbappé on the Champions League stage for Madrid. The French superstar was a constant threat, and he kept his composure to beat Rulli on both spot-kicks, ensuring Madrid began their campaign with a crucial win.
Injury blows and red cards
While the victory was a significant morale booster, the early injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold is a serious concern for the club. The 26-year-old, who joined Madrid from Liverpool, was making his first Champions League start for the club. Depending on the severity of the injury, he could miss a highly anticipated reunion with his former club when Real Madrid travels to Anfield on November 4. The injury is another blow for Alexander-Arnold, who has had a slow start to his Madrid career after also being left out of the most recent England squad.
Real Madrid, now looking to reclaim their Champions League crown after falling to Arsenal in the quarter-finals last season, will travel to Kazakhstan to face Kairat in their next match. Marseille will host Ajax on the same night.
