Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of completing the signing of Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong. The move comes as Liverpool sought a "dream replacement" for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who confirmed last week he will depart Anfield this summer upon the expiry of his contract, ending a two-decade association with his boyhood club and leaving a significant void at right-back.
Anticipating Alexander-Arnold's exit, Liverpool had identified the 24-year-old Frimpong as their first-choice target earlier this year. According to reports from German outlet Kicker on Tuesday, Frimpong is now expected to sign for Liverpool this summer.
Discussions between the club and the player are said to have progressed well, with an agreement set to be reached for Frimpong to join Liverpool on a five-year contract. The deal is facilitated by a €40 million (£33.6m) release clause in Frimpong's current contract with Bayer Leverkusen. This clause has allowed Liverpool to engage directly with the player regarding a transfer.
The Premier League's summer transfer window opens on June 1st, which is the earliest date Frimpong would be able to officially complete his move to Anfield. The window will then close on June 10th before reopening later in the month.
Liverpool appears to have "acted quickly" to secure their preferred target to fill the impending vacancy left by the departure of a key player in Trent Alexander-Arnold.
