A significant legal development has occurred concerning Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio and three individuals who were formerly his teammates in the club's youth ranks. A court in Gran Canaria released an order on Wednesday, formally moving forward with criminal proceedings against the four players. This action opens the path for the prosecutor's office to officially file charges and request a trial in connection with the serious allegations they face.
The allegations against Raúl Asencio and his former youth teammates – identified as Andrés García, Ferrán Ruiz, and Juan Rodríguez – involve the alleged recording of sexual images featuring a woman and a minor, and the subsequent distribution of these images without the consent of the individuals depicted. Specifically, Asencio is alleged to have solicited a video that was recorded by his former teammates. This video reportedly depicted a sexual encounter that took place in June 2023 and involved the ex-teammates, a woman, and a girl.
According to the judge's order formalizing the proceedings, there is evidence cited to support allegations of several crimes. These include violations of privacy and the distribution of videos to third parties without the knowledge or consent of the victims. More gravely, the evidence is also stated to support allegations related to the solicitation of a minor for pornographic purposes and the possession of child pornography.
The case stems from a complaint initially filed by the mother of a 16-year-old girl in the Canary Islands regarding the alleged recording, which she claimed was done without consent. The four players were initially arrested in September 2023, at which time their mobile phones were seized by law enforcement. Real Madrid confirmed then that the players had provided evidence concerning "the sharing of a private video via WhatsApp."
Earlier this year, in February, Raúl Asencio, who is 22 years old, had filed an appeal in an attempt to halt the investigation into his alleged role, specifically concerning the distribution of the video. However, the court rejected this appeal, upholding the decision to continue the inquiry.
Despite these ongoing legal proceedings, Raúl Asencio has been a regular fixture in the Real Madrid first team under coach Carlo Ancelotti this season. He even started in the team's recent match against Mallorca on Wednesday.
The formalization of criminal proceedings represents a critical step in this case, potentially leading to charges and a trial for the players involved regarding these very serious allegations.
