Zeynep Sönmez, the Turkish national tennis sensation, has etched her name into the history books at the third Grand Slam of the season, Wimbledon! In a landmark achievement for Turkish tennis, Sönmez has become the first Turkish woman ever to reach the second round of the venerable tournament.
In a captivating match held in London, the world No. 88 Sönmez faced Romania's Jaqueline Cristian, ranked 55th globally. Sönmez delivered a commanding performance, defeating her opponent 2-0 with set scores of 7-6 and 6-3.
Sönmez particularly impressed tennis enthusiasts with her incredible comeback in the first set, where she rallied from a 5-2 deficit to win it 7-6, drawing significant applause from the crowd. The national player will now face the winner of the match between Karolina Muchova and Xinyu Wang in the second round.
