NBA great Vlade Divac is on the mend after suffering a broken hip in a motorcycle accident on Thursday in Montenegro. The 7-foot-1 Serbian center, known for his distinguished 16-year career with teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings, underwent emergency surgery on Friday.
According to doctors at a hospital in Risan, Montenegro, Divac sustained a fracture and had an artificial hip implanted. Ljubica Mitrovic, a spokeswoman for the hospital, confirmed, "During the day, a surgical procedure was performed. He is in a stable general and physical condition and is under a careful supervision of the medical staff."
Divac, 57, was a trailblazer for European players in the NBA, joining the Lakers in 1989 as part of the first wave of international talent. He holds the distinction of being the first player born and trained outside the U.S. to play in over 1,000 NBA games, achieving All-Star status in 2001.
After his playing career, he transitioned to a front-office role, serving as the general manager for the Sacramento Kings. His immense contributions to basketball were recognized with his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019. Beyond the NBA, Divac also led Serbia's Olympic Committee for two terms.
