UFC icon B.J. Penn’s mother seeks restraining order amid harassment claims

Former UFC champion B.J. Penn is at the center of a deeply troubling legal and family crisis after his mother, Lorraine Shin, filed for a temporary restraining order against him, citing what she describes as months of "extreme psychological abuse" and increasingly erratic behavior. The 46-year-old ex-fighter, once hailed as one of MMA’s greatest talents, has been arrested twice in recent days in connection with family-related disturbances at his home in Hawaii.

According to the court documents submitted by Shin, the situation has escalated dramatically since early May. She alleges that upon returning from a trip, she discovered her belongings—including clothing, personal items, and even her bed—had been removed from her room. Penn reportedly denied knowing anything about their whereabouts, prompting her to file a police report. Over the following days, she claims her purse and valuables were stolen, locks tampered with, and surveillance cameras destroyed or covered up.

In a particularly disturbing incident, Shin says Penn obstructed her from calling 911 by blinding her with a flashlight and physically shoving her against a vehicle, causing pain in her back. She screamed for help until another son, Reagan, intervened. Penn was arrested and ordered to stay away from the property for 48 hours. However, the next morning, Shin claims she found him inside the home again, violating the restraining order. Surveillance footage allegedly supports her claim and led to his second arrest.

Shin’s filing also includes a psychological dimension: she believes Penn may be suffering from Capgras delusion, a rare disorder that causes someone to believe close relatives have been replaced by imposters. She asserts that he no longer believes she is his real mother and suspects her of murdering the family to control their assets. In social media posts, Penn has echoed these beliefs, calling on police to investigate his own family members, claiming they were "murdered and replaced."

Shin is requesting a six-month protective order, along with court-mandated medical treatment for her son. Penn, a UFC Hall of Famer who last competed in 2019, has had a string of legal issues in recent years, including a separate restraining order involving another woman and her two children.
